A Drinking Appetizer: Crispy Lettuce with Shio-Konbu

A Drinking Appetizer: Crispy Lettuce with Shio-Konbu

This was served as an amuse-bouche at a restaurant, and it was so good I wanted seconds! My sake-loving boyfriend loves this.

2~3 leaves
Sesame oil
1 tablespoon
Chirimen jako (semi-dried salted tiny sardines)
1 tablespoon
1 tablespoon (add 1/2 more tablespoon if you like it saltier)
White sesame seeds
A small amount (optional)

1. Wash the lettuce leaves and tear into pieces.
2. Stir fry the chirimen jako with sesame oil in a pan.
3. Add the shio-konbu and stir fry. Add the lettuce and stir fry quickly.
4. Transfer to serving plates, sprinkle sesame seeds to taste, and it's done.

Story Behind this Recipe

This was an "otoshi" (amuse-bouche or free appetizer) at an izakaya (Japanese gastropub) we went to the other day! I think it was like this...
Delicious and addictive!
