Window Omurice for a Character Bento

Window Omurice for a Character Bento

See the little bear peeking out of the window?
You can place your favourite character in the window.
This is good to put in a bento box or to serve as lunch.

1. Shape the stir-fried rice seasoned with ketchup into a mound. Wrap with the usuyaki tamago (thin egg crepe).
2. Slit two horizontal parallel lines with a vertical line in the middle of the usuyaki tamago with a knife to form the window.
3. Flip the cuts to open up the window. Stick spaghetti strands on the corners of the window shutters to fix them.
4. Place a character made with mashed potato in the window. It's done. Pack in a lunch box!
5. [Variation] Here's a little piggy waving hello from the window made with cheese.
6. Many people asked me how to make usuyaki tamago, so I added my tips here.
7. Beat an egg well, and strain with a tea strainer. (This step is important!) Heat a little amount of vegetable oil in a frying pan over low heat, then place the pan on a damp cloth once to cool.
8. Put the beaten egg in the pan and cover with a lid. Heat over very low heat while keeping an eye on it and cook on both sides. It will be the beautiful yellow very thin omelette.

Story Behind this Recipe

-I wanted to make a different version of omurice, and I came up with the idea opening up the window.
