Fold a round slice of ham into half, and make diagonal cuts into the folded edge that are about 1 cm apart. Roll up the ham after making the cuts. The cuts shouldn't be too shallow or too deep.
If you roll the ham too tightly, it won't open up. Shift the ham a little (about 1 mm) at the start, and try rolling it verrry slowly.
As you roll it slowly, there will be about a 5 mm shift at the end between the 2 halves of the ham.
Seen from the top, it looks like a flower blooming!
Story Behind this Recipe
My mother used to make these.
If you cut off the last cut (on the left of the Step 1 photo) and start rolling the ham from there, the finish will be very tidy. The flower petals look nicer if you make diagonal rather than straight cuts. Unfold each petal slowly.
