Hair-sprouted Chikuwa for Bentos [Charaben]

Try these fun chikuwa with a bouncy head of hair!! They're super cute. They're really simple to make and great for filling up space in your bento box.

Ingredients: 2 servings

Chikuwa
1
Broccoli
about 2 florets
Black sesame seeds, ham, mayonnaise, etc.
for decoration

Steps

1. Cut the chikuwa into four pieces. Parboil or microwave the broccoli, and cut into the sizes shown.
2. Insert the broccoli into the chikuwa, stem first. Trim off any part of the stem that sticks out.
3. Here's user "syusyusyu"'s idea. The face was made from sesame seeds and ham. This is sure to delight small children.
4. The sunglasses were made from nori. Very cool.
5. They can be a little scary in a bento.
6. I made this hairy-topped chikuwa family. Upper-left: Dad, Upper-right: Mom, Lower-left: Big brother, Lower-right: Baby (the hair can be adjusted as the baby grows)
7. Addendum: Use a dab of mayonnaise to "glue" on the ham and nori pieces.

Story Behind this Recipe

I wondered what I could insert in chikuwa to make them fun. Broccoli makes them cute, easy, and useful for character bentos. After making these, I added mayonnaise and they tasted like a yummy salad.
