Chicken and Shrimp Macaroni Gratin

Macaroni gratin might be one of the most popular Japanese family food dishes in Japan. This dish is great for parties. I know everyone will love it so I decided to share this recipe with you. I want you all to enjoy this creamy, rich, warm and tasty Japanese family dish!

Ingredients: 6-8 servings

White sauce
Salted butter
8 tablespoons
All purpose flour
10 tablespoons
Whole milk
1000 - 1200 ml
Heavy cream
240 ml
Bouillon cubes
Kosher salt
1/2 teaspoons
Grated nutmeg
A pinch
Ground white pepper
A pinch
Chicken and shrimp
Salted butter
8 tablespoons
Chicken thigh
1 1 pound (cut into bite-sized pieces)
1/2 pound
1 medium size (Slice thinly)
4 slices (Cut into quarter inches)
White wine
120 ml
Kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon
Ground white pepper
A pinch
Macaroni pasta (Elbow)
1/2 pound
Grated parmesan
to taste
to taste
Salted butter
to taste


1. Cook the macaroni according to the direction on the package. Drain well.
2. Melt butter in a sauce pan and add flour. Cook over low heat for 2 - 3 minutes. Pour the milk into the butter mixture in several batches and stir well with a whisk. Cook over low heat, stirring with a spatula, until it thickens. Mix in bullion cubes, grated nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
3. Melt 2 table spoons of butter in a saucepan and continue stirring until it becomes soft. Add the chicken and bacon. After the chicken color changes, add the shrimp and mushrooms. After the shrimp color changes, pour in the white wine and cook for about 2 minutes. Add salt and pepper.
4. Preheat the oven to 450 F. Mix 1, 2, and 3 together and add the heavy cream into the mixture. Add more whole milk or heavy cream if needed. Add salt and pepper if needed.
5. Spread some butter(not included in ingredients) in a baking dish and pour the mixture in. Spread the Parmesan cheese and bread crumbs over the mixture. Cut up the butter into small chunks and place onto the top.
6. Place the baking pan in the oven and bake until the top becomes golden brown.
