1. Prepare and measure out your ingredients. I used a handful of raisins and almonds this time around, but dried cranberries and walnuts are also delicious! Take a saucepan and place it on heat set to low. Mix the milk and water together.
2. Start melting the butter in the saucepan.
3. Once the butter has melted, pour in the oats and roast them gently over low heat for a couple minutes. They should start smelling really nice, but be careful not to brown or burn them. Move the roasted oats back into a bowl or similar and set aside.
4. After a couple minutes, the raisins or cranberries should be plump and soft. Transfer to a bowl and serve with a sprinkle of brown sugar and cinnamon. You can also warm up some cream and serve that on the side as well.
5. Let the oatmeal simmer for 4-5 minutes, while adjusting the consistency with the remaining milk mixture. Once the oats are cooked, turn off the heat and add the toppings. Give it a couple stirs until just mixed. Lid and let sit for 2 minutes.
6. Pour about 70% of the milk mixture into the same saucepan and wait until it start to simmer a bit. Then add in the roasted oats. Bring the oats and milk mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Once it starts to bubble, immediately turn the heat back down to low. Try not to touch the oatmeal too much during this step.
