Boil the sausage and cut it in half lengthwise.
Cut the imitation crab stick in half and wrap one half in nori seaweed.
Make the parts using a nori puncher or scissors. To make the cheeks, boil a carrot and cut out a circle of carrot with a straw.
To make the parts of the face I used this nori puncher. I made the nose of the panda into eyes and the mouth into noses.
Now use the ham or sausage. To make the crown, use this kind of cutter and then cut it in half. Make the fan by cutting with a knife.
Now use the snow peas. Cut the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) using a cutter. To make the headgear cut off the top 2/3 and cut the bottom using a knife to make the shape.
Put the parts together like this. On the left is the emperor and on the right is the empress.
Add the parts that you made and you're finished.
When you put them next to each other, they look dignified like Hina dolls!
Once you add the cheeks they look so cute.
Story Behind this Recipe
I made this for my daughter. I wanted to start creating the exciting atmosphere just before the Girl's Day Festival so I made this bento using the ingredients I had on hand at home.
This recipe is simple as you only need to cut and place the parts on. If it is too troublesome to make the fan and crown you could use a food pick with a flower shape or a tooth pick with a decorative design.
Their expressions change according to how you place the parts of the face so please try making different expressions!
