Easy! How to De-Sand Manila Clams or Surf Clams

If you use this easy-to-remember ratio for the salted water, you can easily de-sand Manila clams (asari). This ratio works for surf clams (hamaguri) too.

Manila clams
300 g
1/2 tablespoon

1. Dissolve the salt in the water to make salt water.
2. Line the clams on a metal rack place in a tray (see Helpful Hints) without overlapping. Pour the salt water over them until the tops are just sticking out.
3. Cover with a newspaper and place in a dark place for 1-2 hours. This is for using clams bought at the supermarket.
4. Rub the shells together as you rinse with water and then you can use them in your cooking.

Story Behind this Recipe

Since there's only two of us, I always buy a small pack of manila clams. I thought up this ratio for removing the sand that only uses a small amount of water and is easy to remember. This is my memo.
