Deep-Fried Tofu in Sauce with Atsuage

Deep-Fried Tofu in Sauce with Atsuage

By just cutting and heating up some deep-fried thick tofu called 'atsuage,' you can easily make a fake version of fried tofu in sauce! Serve for breakfast.

Ingredients: 2-4 servings

Atsuage (10 x 10 cm)
Vegetable oil (for cooking)
a small amount
Grated daikon radish
to taste
Green onions (chopped)
to taste
100 ml
Mentsuyu (3x concentrate)
2 tablespoons
2 1/2 tablespoons
Dashi stock granules
1/4 teaspoon

1. (Make the sauce) Put all of the sauce ingredients into a heat-resistant container and microwave for 1.5 minutes at 600 W.
2. You could also put the ingredients into a pot and bring to a boil.
3. Cut the atsuage into bite-sized pieces.
4. Heat the frying pan and then add the vegetable oil. Put in the atsuage and fry both sides. (if you cover with a lid, they'll plump up).
5. Place the atsuage from Step 4 onto a dish and top with the well-strained grated daikon radish. Then pour on the sauce from Step 1 and garnish with green onions.

Story Behind this Recipe

I used to make this with firm tofu, but then I started thinking that using atsuage would be easier.
Since you don't need to drain the tofu or coat it with katakuriko, this method is so much more fun!
