Simple Rice Mix with Komatsuna and Pork Belly

Pan-fried meat and vegetables mixed with cooked rice for a meal that's ready in just a few minutes! The rich umami flavor of pork belly makes this dish really flavorsome, and it's a great way to get kids to eat komatsuna. This is also perfect for making into rice-balls.

Ingredients: 2 servings

2 heads (1/2 pack)
Thinly sliced pork belly
100 g
Salt and pepper
a small amount
Vegetable oil
as needed
◎Salt and pepper
to taste
1 teaspoon
◎Soy sauce
3 teaspoons
Cooked rice (warm)
300 g (about 2 cups' worth)
Ground sesame seeds
as needed


1. Separate the komatsuna leaves and stalks and chop into small pieces.
2. Cut the pork belly into strips and lightly season with salt and pepper.
3. Heat vegetable oil in a pan over a medium heat and cook the pork belly.
4. When the pork is no longer pink, add the chopped komatsuna stalks and cook for a few minutes.
5. Add the chopped komatsuna leaves and mix everything together. Add ◎ marked ingredients and combine well. Turn off the heat.
6. Add the komatsuna and pork-belly mixture from Step 5 to warm, cooked rice and using a rice paddle or a spatula, folding thoroughly to combine.
7. Sprinkle with the ground sesame seeds to finish.

Story Behind this Recipe

I wanted to find a way to get my daughter to eat komatsuna, and this is what I came up with. Though it's simply-seasoned it's really delicious, and my daughter cleared her plate! My husband is a fan too!
