Our Family Recipe for Hayashi Rice (Hashed Beef Stew with Rice)

A family favorite recipe for hayashi rice (hashed beef stew) that is not too sour-tasting.

Ingredients: about 5 servings

Onion (thinly-sliced)
1 large
Thinly-sliced beef offcuts
250 g
Red wine
50 ml
For the sauce:
Canned demiglace sauce
1 can (290 g)
Canned tomatoes (or fresh tomatoes)
100 g
Japanese Worcestershire-style sauce
2 tablespoons
White sugar
3 tablespoons
Ketchup
6 tablespoons

Steps

1. Combine the sauce ingredients and mix well.
2. Heat a frying pan and stir-fry the onion until cooked. Add the meat, turn the heat to high, add the red wine and stir-fry quickly.
3. Put the combined sauce ingredients from Step 1 into the pan. Simmer until the meat is cooked (about 5 minutes) and it's done.

Story Behind this Recipe

I made this for my eldest daughter, who finds hayashi rice made from commercial roux mix to be too sour.
