Mix the mentsuyu sauce with the rice, wrap in plastic wrap, and shape into a nameko shape.
Place white rice into the plastic wrap, add in your favorite ingredients, and make a round rice ball.
Make the eyes, mouth, and the scale leaves (hakama) with nori seaweed.
Cut the ham into a sakura shape. Slice the boiled broccoli stem, and cut into leaf shapes.
Once the rice balls have cooled, stick on all of the parts, and it is done! (Stick the leaves on with uncooked spaghetti noodles.)
Story Behind this Recipe
We are having a picnic at the park today. The sakura will be blooming soon, so I made a spring themed sakura and tsukushi (horsetail shoots) bento. I found some real horsetail shoots at the park, which made my son really happy.
It is good to use a thin heavy-duty plastic mat to organize the nori and ham parts.
