I had this in Bali! Satay! Indonesian Yakitori

When you think of Indonesian food, you think of satay! This is Indonesian-style yakitori! The chicken is seasoned and grilled. If you have these ingredients, you can make this so easily.

Ingredients: 2 servings

Chicken (thigh or breast)
Bamboo skewers
Flavoring ingredients:
□ Marinade:
a pinch
Kecap Manis
2 tablespoons
Onion, grated
Fish sauce
1 teaspoon
1 teaspoon
a small amount
□ Sambal Sate (Dipping Sauce):
Peanut butter
2 tablespoons
Fish sauce
2 tablespoons
Shrimp paste (optional)
1/4 teaspoon
1 tablespoon
Red chili pepper powder
Adjust the spiciness to your taste

1. This recipe is so easy. Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces.
2. Combine all of the marinade ingredients in a bowl. Put the marinade and the chicken from Step 1 into a Ziploc or sealable plastic bag and let it marinate for at least 20 minutes.
3. After it has marinated thoroughly, stick the chicken on bamboo skewers. You should have 4 skewers of chicken.
4. Grill the chicken on a yakitori style rack that can be bought at hardware shops (in Japan.) If you don't have one, you can use a fish or regular grill.
5. Combine all of the ingredients for the 'Sambal Sate' dipping sauce. Place into a small but deep dish.
6. Once Step 4 has been grilled, arrange on a dish and optionally accompany with cucumbers, tomatoes, or lemon.
7. They are delicious plain but...! Try them with the dipping sauce!

Story Behind this Recipe

I was wondering what type of dish would go well with the nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice) that I had made and then I thought of this satay! The marinade and dipping sauce are all approximate amounts, so adjust the richness and whatnot to suit your tastes!
