Easy and Satisfying Kansai-style Sukiyaki-don Rice Bowl

Easy and Satisfying Kansai-style Sukiyaki-don Rice Bowl

I love this dish of sweet soy sauce flavoured beef and Japanese leeks! As you don't need warishita sauce (sukiyaki broth) beforehand, this is a very easy Kansai-style sukiyaki rice bowl.

Ingredients: 2 servings

Beef (thinly sliced or cut-offs)
150 to 200 g
White part of a Japanese leek
Vegetable oil
as needed
☆ Sugar
2 tablespoons
☆ Soy sauce
2 tablespoons
☆ Sake
4 tablespoons
Plain cooked rice
2 servings
Fresh eggs or onsen-style poached eggs
Shichimi spice
To taste

1. Wash the leek and slice into bite sizes.
2. Cut the beef into bite sizes if necessary.
3. Heat vegetable oil in a pot and fry the beef over medium heat.
4. After the beef is cooked through, add the leek and fry quickly.
5. Add the ☆ seasonings and simmer over low to medium heat.
6. After the leeks have softened, turn off the heat.
7. [If you use fresh eggs] Whisk the eggs and pour into the pot at Step 6. Heat through to your desired hardness. Transfer to individual bowls over rice.
8. [If you use onsen-style poached eggs] Serve rice in individual bowls and top with the sukiyaki from Step 6. Make an indentation in the middle and drop the poached egg in the middle.
9. Sprinkle with shichimi spice.

Story Behind this Recipe

My family's favorite dish is Kansai-style sukiyaki and I wanted to make it easily. With this simplified version over rice, I have less washing to do afterward. I've made this often.
