Divide the broccoli into florets, cut each into 2-4 pieces, blanch and allow to drain in a sieve.
In a pan with olive oil, sauté crushed garlic (optional) until fragrant.
Add the drained broccoli with the cut edge facing down, and cook over medium-high heat until golden brown. Flip and slightly char all sides.
When the broccoli is well-cooked, season with salt and pepper and/or seasoning salt to taste.
Story Behind this Recipe
We frequently add this colorful broccoli to our bentos. I wanted something different than just eating boiled broccoli with mayonnaise, so I came up with this fragrant, slightly charred taste.
The garlic adds a rich flavor. Don't over-boil the broccoli or it will break apart too easily when frying. Bacon and sausage (as shown) go great with broccoli. It's also delicious with mushrooms (shimeji, maitake, etc...).
