Fried Sweet Prawns

You can make a fantastic snack dish by just coating shrimp with flour and frying until crispy! You'll be able to crunch through the shells too.

Ingredients: 20 shrimp

Ama-ebi shrimp (with their shells)
Karaage-ko coating for karaage
2 tablespoons
Vegetable oil
as needed
a pinch


1. Coat the shrimp in Karaage-ko and cut the lemon into wedges.
2. Drop the shrimp into vegetable oil heated to 180°C and fry until crispy. Drain the fried shrimp on paper towels.
3. Transfer to a plate and sprinkle with salt. Squeeze over lemon juice to taste and eat the shrimp, shells and all!

Story Behind this Recipe

At first I tried seasoning these prawns with salt then baking them, but they still smelled fishy. So just as I thought about frying them instead. I realised I had some Karaage-ko that I had bought to use in my bento, so dredged and fried them. They turned out aromatic and delicious!
