Brown Sugar 'Karintou' Snacks

With only a pinch of white sugar, the black sugar will melt in your mouth.


Cake flour
200 g
Baking powder
1 teaspoon
20 g
White sesame seeds
7 g
70 ml
Vegetable oil
20 cc
For candy coating: black sugar
80 g
For candy coating: white sugar
80 g
For candy coating: soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon
For candy coating: water
40 ml


1. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, sugar, then add the sesame seeds, water, and vegetable oil and knead.
2. Once the dough is formed, wrap in plastic wrap and let rise for 30 minutes.
3. Roll out until it is 1 cm thick. Then cut to 3 cm long and 1 cm wide strips.
4. Use your hands roll into tubes.
5. Deep fry in 160°C oil for 10 to 15 minutes.
6. In a pan, combine the brown sugar, sugar, soy sauce, water and heat until it starts to bubble. Once the large bubbles change to small bubbles, add the Step 5 karintou to coat.
7. Spread out on a baking sheet to prevent sticking. They're done once they're dried.

Sesame and black sugar can be tasted in these lightly-sweetened snacks. I made these while keeping my figure in mind.
