Simple Tempeh Manis

Indonesian kecap manis has finally become easy to get hold of in Japan. If you ever get bored of soy sauce flavored dishes, give this a try.


as desired
★High quality salt
a pinch
★Kecap manis
2-3 tablespoons
★Garlic (grated)
1 clove
Soy bean oil (or your choice of oil)
as needed


1. Finely chop the tempeh.
2. Fry the tempeh in a frying pan (in 2-3 batches).
3. Leave 1 tablespoon oil in the pan and add all of the tempeh back into the pan. Then add the ★ ingredients and mix everything together.
4. It's ready! You can add some citrus juice over the top for extra zest. Have fun with the flavours.
5. This is kecap manis, a sweet ketchup made with black soy beans.

Story Behind this Recipe

Usually you make this dish by stir-frying it with sambal. But I made it sweeter, so that my kids could eat it. You eat it like natto, just dollop it on rice and mix.
