New Year's Ozouni (Mochi Soup) from Aichi Prefecture
Ozouni (mochi soup) made in Aichi Prefecture (Japan) is a simple soup made with just mochi and mochina greens. If you have married into a family from Aichi, or you moved here for work, use this recipe for reference...
Add the ★ ingredients to a pot and bring to a boil.
Add the mochi and mochina greens to the pot and simmer until the mochi softens. Add salt to taste.
Transfer to bowls and top with bonito flakes.
Story Behind this Recipe
I simplified my family recipe.
If you let the water boil too strongly during Step 2, the mochi will melt and the dashi broth will become cloudy, so be careful. The mochi should be the square type. Mochina greens (also called Shougatsu greens) are a traditional vegetable that show up in our local grocery stores around New Year's. If you can't find them, just use komatsuna greens.
