Hearty Meat and Tofu

The tofu is just cut in half, so it's really hearty. The key is to stir fry the tofu a little to brown it and evaporate some of its moisture.

Ingredients: 2 servings

Firm tofu
1 block
Thinly sliced beef offcuts
200 g
1 tablespoon
1 tablespoon
Dashi stock
100 ml
Soy sauce
1 tablespoon
Green onion
a small amount
Shichimi spice (optional)
a small amount


1. Cut the tofu in half. Wrap each piece in paper towels to get rid of some of the moisture.
2. Heat up some oil in a non-stick pan, and stir fry the beef. When the beef has browned add the sugar and the sake.
3. Add the sliced onion and stir fry until everything is coated in oil. Take out of the pan.
4. Add the tofu to the same pan, and fry slowly on both sides until browned.
5. Spread the onion and beef from Step 3 over the tofu. Add the dashi stock and soy sauce, and simmer for about 15 minutes while spooning the cooking liquid over the tofu and beef.
6. Transfer to serving plates, sprinkle with chopped green onions, plus shichimi spice to taste. Done!

The meat and tofu served at a restaurant was really good, so I tried making it at home with big pieces of tofu.
